Description
Centurion was green once. You can still see the ghost of it from orbit, dark striations in the rock where root systems ran for kilometers before the fires came. Now the surface is a furnace, the atmosphere a slow acid, and the only things moving are the machines. Vast crawler-platforms drift across the plains on treads the size of city blocks. The wind turns their particulate wake into razored silica storms. The bones are everywhere, not scattered but massed, in formations that suggest the dying wasn't random. Someone arranged this.
Xenoarchaeologists who have made it planetside and back point to the crawler-platforms as the tell. They aren't human-built, and no one has identified the fuel source. Most researchers who've looked at the data think a Precursor species did this, though that conclusion doesn't get said out loud much. The natural resources were plundered, but the technology is what is studied here.
The main settlement, Lodestar, clings to the equatorial ridge where the sulfur vents run hot enough to crack the corrosive layer. It is one of the few places on Centurion where the air is merely bad rather than lethal.
